Marjoram is a tender perennial herb native to the Mediterranean area. It has citrus and sweet pine flavor similar to a sweeter oregano. In some parts of the world, especially the Middle East, it is synonymous with oregano. It was also considered a symbol of happiness to the Greeks and Romans.
Marjoram is frequently found in Polish, Italian, Mexican and French cooking. It can be used either fresh or dried. It is commonly used in the French bouquet garn and herbes de Provence, as well as the Middle Eastern za'atar. It is often used to flavor meats, tomato sauce, marinated vegetables and it's traditionally used in kielbasa.
